How to pick a bag that always fits
Buy to 22 × 14 × 9 in (56 × 36 × 23 cm). It clears nearly every airline in the table — the
main exceptions are strict European budget carriers, where a smaller underseat bag is safer.
Watch wheels and handles. Airline limits include them. A bag marked "21 inch" can
measure 23 with wheels — measure the whole thing.
Soft-sided gives you margin. It squishes into a sizer; hard shells don't.
Flying a budget airline in Europe? Check weight, not just size — 7–10 kg limits catch people
more than dimensions do.
Will it fit the overhead bin?
If it's within the size limit, it fits. A standard 22 × 14 × 9 in carry-on slides into virtually any full-size overhead wheels-first (long side in). Newer "pivot" or "space" bins take bags on their side, so even more fit per row.
Small planes have small bins. On regional jets — and some older narrowbodies — the bins are too shallow for a roller, so you'll be asked to gate-check it at the door (usually free, handed back planeside or at baggage claim). Keep valuables, meds and a charger in your personal item.
The real problem is a full bin, not size. Bins fill front-to-back; the last boarding groups often find no space left. What actually guarantees you room is boarding earlier — via elite status or a co-branded airline card — not a bigger bag.
